Our whitetail hunting on the Gist Kinsman Ranch is driven by one philosophy.   Manage our deer herd with certain new and aggressive strategies, so our hunters see the biggest 200+" BC bucks they have ever seen in their lives on each trip made to the hunting blinds of the GKR.  A very simple vision that requires a very deep level of committment!

Our strategy for our GKR hunting pastures involves a 7 point plan:    (developed by our owners and our wildlife biologists)

1. A 3 year program designed to eliminate all native genetics on the ranch in our trophy pastures.  This allowed our 'introduced genetics' to always move forward and never backward!   An early mistake in deer management can cause problems for many years to come in the quality of deer produced.
2. Stocking our pastures with ONLY world class genetics that produce big beams, wide spreads, heavy mass, and those tall GKR tines, out of bloodlines that are 'bred for survivability' in the unique ecosystem and brush of deep south Texas.
3. Many strategically placed watering stations to hydrate and reduce the stress that can be associated with 'crowded watering holes'.
4. An excellent year-round natural and supplemental nutrition program that supports the skeletal growth, immune complex and antler development of these magnificent animals we love.
5. Medicated supplemental feeding program, during strategic times of the year when bucks are vulnerable to parasites, infections and stress.
6. A solid committment to allow our bucks to reach maturity, while chosing bloodlines that reach their potential earlier in life, rather than later.
7. A 'no hesitation policy' to remove bucks that do not measure up to our vision of excellence for our program's very specific goals. 

• This 'no hesitation policy' is a strategy that ensures the passing forward of only the most ideal genetic traits that we prefer. 
• It protects the habitat for the bucks we want to reach maturity.
• It also eliminates the main source of stress, morbidity and mortality of our GKR trophy bucks.... Which is a young aggressive management buck! 

We also have instituted a unique buck to doe ratio 'strategy' that we have stumbled upon that is making all the difference in the world in our herd quality and size of our bucks.  We will keep this 'management tool' quiet for now!

The GKR vision of trophy deer management is challanging on many levels, as well as expensive to institute and sustain. However, it is one that is beginning to pay off as our management plan matures each and every year and the size of our GKR bucks gets bigger and bigger.  Indeed, our vision is starting to come into focus for our hunters, families and friends.  Praise God!
